Guidance

Guidance is just another word for advice and although we all say we could use a little guidance, no one wants advice.  When we hear the word "advice" something inside of our heads pushes the off button.

We, as in bloggers we, should make an effort to expunge the word "advice" and use only the word "guidance".

Instead of saying, "let me give you a little piece of advice," we should say something like. "let me offer you some guidance."  "Guidance" has a heavenly sound to it but "advice" sounds like it is coming from parents that have no idea what they are talking about.

So here is my advice to you.  Do not give advice, give guidance...er ah..

I'm sorry..Let me offer you some guidance...do not give advice.

  1. ;) Very true..made me smile and think of 'guidance counsellors' (they're slowly invading UK schools too..) - I hope they follow your rule..If the thought of advice makes us shudder heaven knows what it does to the average teenager..Jae

  2. LOL. Liked the ending. Although I can be as stubborn towards guidance as I am towards advice. But that might just be me ;-)

  4. Yeah, I try to stay away from this myself but every once in a while I screw up and let myself get into the pattern again. Oh well, one day I will learn to offer guidance! Nice offering, way to let us think about what really matters.

  5. Wonderful distinction between the two... I see a softening when guidance is used instead of anything with a "should," even to myself. Nicely said!

  6. Yep I reckon you are right. Though I also reckon it is all in the delivery, the tone of voice and facial expressions which flavor the words, that influence their reception.

  8. LOL, and isn't it true... how two words meaning such similar things, yet one leads to negative thoughts, while the other is welcomed like an old friend.

  10. How well you have demonstrated that advice is something we don't want to receive but guidance is fine, even if it is directions down the wrong road!

  11. You've pinpointed one of the interesting quirks of our human nature...our belligerent attitude toward certain words and acceptance of others that mean the same. Ha ha. Funny creatures we are.
